Description:
Grave fill of the late infant burial in cut [A-007]. The fill was very compact and appears to be packed with hard lumps of mudbrick, which made it difficult to identify the cut, thereby reducing the security of the grave fill. There were no grave goods and very few, small pot sherds. The skeleton was broadly in the Islamic W-E orientation of the other burials, with the head at the west end. The torso lay mostly on its back, but below the pelvis the legs were somewhat contorted, appearing to bend back the 'wrong way' towards the south. This is probably partly an attempt to stuff the infant into the rough and inadequately sized grave cut and partly the compressive effects of the compacted mudbrick-rich fill piled on top. Bone preservation was moderately good considering. Infant appears under 6 months. Reburied by the workmen about 100m north of the trench.
